We have bi-weekly General Meetings on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM in BLTN 006

OUR MEETINGS

  • We begin every meeting with a fun icebreaker activity before moving into a discussion of the past week’s screening. next, our officers go over current projects and get member input. then, members propose themes and film choices for upcoming screenings, and we end each meeting with a vote.

  • We have two meetings per month. In the first meeting of the month, we choose the upcoming month’s screening themes (i.e. in the first meeting of September, we choose screening themes for the month of October). In the second meeting of the month, we decide movies based off of the themes chosen in the meeting prior.

all members are welcome and encouraged to propose a theme or movie idea! we always begin voting sessions by opening the floor for ideas and once we’ve heard from everyone who wanted to speak, we all take a vote.

  • The majority of our screenings have themes that relate to the timing of when we’ll be showing them. For instance, some themes could be related to:

    Holidays

    • Example: We had a double feature of Night of the Living Dead and The Blob for a Cult Classic Horror theme around Halloween.

    The season

    • Example: We had a Fall theme and screened Autumn Sonata last September.

    A film’s anniversary

    • Example: We’ve screened Phantom of the Paradise on its 50th anniversary

    a filmmaker’s birthday

    • example: We screened a double feature of Luis Bunuel’s Un Chien Andalou and L;age D’or for the director’s 125th birthday.

a tribute to filmmakers/actors who’ve recently passed away

    • example: we screened The Elephant Man after David Lynch’s passing.

    national celebrations

    • example: we screened Vera Chytilova’s Daisies for Women’s History Month

and we’re open to many more ideas!

  • Short answer, yes! But keep in mind, for the majority of our screenings, the rule of thumb is typically to show films that are underrated or under-discussed. Therefore, we typically avoid blockbusters, particularly recent blockbusters, and aim to highlight films that will strike a more differentiated conversation. That isn’t to say we never show any recently released films! All proposals are welcome and you should never hesitate to get the opinion of the group. Meetings are highly collaborative!!

OUR OFFICERS

OUR STORY

The Aggie Arthouse was founded by Martha Ramos ‘26 and Tanya Alvarez-Salsedo ‘26. After the two had first met and discovered that they had both even heard of the same old and obscure movies, much less enjoyed watching them, they were ecstatic and sought to seek out a community on campus they previously believed to be non-existent. They not only wanted to bring together cinephiles who enjoyed far-too-underrated and far-too-underdiscussed films, but they also wanted to engage the greater Texas A&M campus by publicly screening these films. Assuming the challenge of hosting viewings for movies the student body likely otherwise would not be exposed to in these modern times, our organization hoped to broaden their film-taste to include all of the amazing films that tend to go under mainstream’s radar - not for lack of quality, but rather exposure.
To achieve this, it became a priority that our organization showcase a wide-range of films - from varying eras, countries, languages, cultures and genres - while on this journey, so that our rich and diverse student body may, not only each find ~something~ across our screenings they liked, but also explore others. In order to achieve this inclusivity in our screenings, we believed it had to also be reflected in our recruitment efforts. As such, we absolutely love finding individuals interested in joining our organization from all different movie-loving backgrounds.
Whether you are a French New Wave fanatic, a diehard 1980s grindhouse lover,  or have only seen box office hits, the only requirement for joining is that you have a passion to explore film and, of course, be open-minded! We love having different perspectives within our organization and honoring such diversity is one of our most important values. Visit apply now to see how you can join us or reach out!
